BOSTON, JAN 12, 2023 — Report for the World once again invites independent news organizations across the globe to join its growing network of host newsroom partners, as it deepens its presence in different regions through editorial collaborations and professional development of its reporting corps.
Newsrooms are invited to apply between now until Feb. 20. They will be asked to make the case for the beat they want to cover and how they will provide support and mentorship to their prospective corps members. Current beats can be found here.
If selected, Report for the World will provide newsrooms with salary support to hire local journalists and offer professional development in journalism safety, cyber security, visual journalism, international collaboration and story design.
An initiative of The GroundTruth Project, Report for the World currently supports 30 local journalists in 17 newsrooms across Brazil, India, Nigeria, Ukraine, Mexico, Hungary, Zimbabwe and Peru. We are especially interested in media from the Middle East, North Africa, Southeast Asia and Southern Africa for this round.
The application process for Report for the World is highly competitive with two rounds of interviews with shortlisted applicants to determine a mutually beneficial fit. The selected newsrooms will then hire corps members through a competitive process and welcome them as full-time employees of the newsrooms for up to three years. Corps members take on critical issues — from gender inequality to climate change, corruption, labor rights, health, and education — as their assigned beats.
Report for the World’s Impact:
While the overall safety of journalists declined across the globe in 2022, Report for the World’s newsrooms and corps members have covered critical issues with consistency and depth.
“Amid financial, political and security threats to journalists, we see that our model is strengthening the voices of independent media on some of the most important issues in their communities, and we are thrilled to expand the program in our existing regions and to new parts of the world,” said Preethi Nallu, global director at Report for the World.
In our inaugural countries like India, we have continued to recruit newsrooms that are at the forefront of intersectional coverage of news.
“Caste and gender continue to be the greatest barriers to accessing civil liberties in India several decades after we achieved self-rule. In collaboration with Report for the World we have resolved to address this anomaly head-on by appointing three journalists, each of whom will focus all their attention exclusively on these areas,” said Dhanya Rajendran, co-founder at The News Minute.
Meanwhile, our first newsroom partner in a conflict zone, Ukrainska Pravda, is covering the environmental impacts of the conflict through a Report for the World corps member.
“Ukrainska Pravda is first among all Ukrainian media to have a reporter that specializes on the topic of climate change, as well as ecology, which have already been negatively affected by Russian invasion,” said Sevgil Musayeva, editor-in-chief at the outlet.
In Mexico, which was ranked the deadliest country for journalists in 2022, Report for the World corps member Violeta Santiago is investigating corruption at Quinto Elemento Lab.
“Being committed to investigations helps us as a newsroom expose the asymmetries, abuses, and the accountability of those in power towards citizens,” explained Santiago.
Report for the World draws upon best practices learned from GroundTruth’s successful Report for America program, which will be announcing its latest selection of corps members this spring. Like its sister program, Report for the World is based on a highly-leveraged financial model meant to inspire community philanthropy. The program pays for half the full-time salary of a corps member for the first year, while coaching and supporting local partner newsrooms to raise the other half of the salary through philanthropy, earned revenue and crowdfunding.

In this regard, the Commission wishes to invite them to the opening and closing sessions of the 42 nd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council and the 36th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union, scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 15 to 16 February and 18 to 19 February 2023, respectively.
