After their consultative meeting this Monday in Kinshasa, President Félix Tshisekedi and his counterpart from South Sudan Salva Kiir called for the urgent relaunch of the Nairobi and Luanda Peace Processes, initiated respectively by the East African Community (EAC) and the African Union (AU).

The two Heads of State placed particular emphasis on the need to harmonize and establish complementarity between the two Processes for an effective and lasting solution aimed at restoring peace, security and stability in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the region.

“The motivation that brought President Salva Kiir here is the search for peace. He wants to see stability in the region and will spare no effort to contribute to it,” declared President Tshisekedi during the press conference organized after this meeting.

“Our discussions focused on promoting peace and stability in our region. I reassure you of my commitment, as President of the EAC, to work together to have a secure region for its socio-economic development,” said President Salva Kiir. According to him, the DRC should not leave the EAC because some members do not want peace.

Furthermore, responding to a question on the need to build walls along the borders of the DRC, President Tshisekedi considered that this was not important. “We have thousands of kilometers of borders. We will regret having put so much money into something else.”

The Head of State clarified that the conflict between the DRC and Rwanda has nothing to do with their people. “It is a regime led by an individual who is attacking the DRC,” he said. “But this diet is not eternal. One day, one way or another, this will all stop,” he concluded.

After the DRC stage, President Salva Kiir will continue his tour in Angola where he will meet President João Lourenço as part of his consultations. The security crisis in eastern DRC will be among the subjects they will address.
